Decorative Bird Lamp Bookends

Decorative Bird Lamp Bookends

A Perfect Accessory for the Cottage Style Home

I received this wonderful gift–a set of bird lamp bookends. They came from my sister-in-law’s shop Restored Home in Alvin, Texas. I can’t imagine how she knew I wanted them. Maybe I tipped her off when I saw them in her shop and yelled, “I WANT THOSE!”

It was love at first sight. They actually look even better in person.

My biggest dilemma was deciding where they should go in my home and what should go between them. I know, they’re bookends, so I should use books. But I was thinking that was a little obvious. So I thought about painting this old wood CD case that I found at a thrift shop and maybe adding some sort of floral arrangement, (you know, just to be different and not quite so predictable).

However, I decided the best place in my home for the lamps at the moment is atop my kitchen cabinet. Since I already have foliage up there, I decided to nix the wood crate/floral arrangement idea and go with…drum roll please…you got it…books! Probably not a bad idea since my floral arranging abilities are highly questionable.

I know what you’re thinking: What happened to that wood ADORABLE wood CD caddy? It received a coat of Chalk Paint and at this point, is a hand towel/washcloth holder in my kitchen. Well, it beats sitting on a garage shelf gathering dust, huh?

So I skipped on over to my nearest Garden Ridge Pottery store. Yes, it’s true–sometimes I actually skip (but only when nobody is looking). I picked up some of these nifty little decorative “book” boxes. They were a perfect fit for the space, and there were many different style choices.

At this point you’re thinking, “Where did you plug in the lamps?” and “Are you gonna climb up there every time you want to turn them on and off?” The plug comes from a hole that I drilled through the top of the cabinets. There’s an outlet inside the cabinet that is used to power the under-cabinet microwave. As for climbing up there to turn them on and off, well…I’ve got that part covered too!

I got one of these remote control outlets from Amazon.com and plugged it into the outlet located inside of the cabinet. It has two outlets built into it and it comes with this remote control for turning the outlet on and off. How great is that?!

Now I can easily turn the lights on and off from down here on the floor. A great big YAY and a little happy dance! (‘Cause I’m a bit on the short side, and really not a fan of climbing).
