Festival of Flowers – British Gardens In Time
The Festival of Flowers is held annually in Mobile, Alabama at the Providence Hospital campus. This year’s theme was “British Gardens in Time.” It just so happened that I was in the Mobile area on vacation and was able to attend this fabulous event for the first time. What a treat! Being the flower lover that I am, as you can imagine, I was like a kid in a candy store!
Sponsored by The Crampton Trust, the Featured Exhibit at the 2014 Festival of Flowers is a beautiful steel gazebo that was borrowed from the grounds of Providence Hospital. Designed by Kip McConnell of Flowerwood Nursery, it is surrounded by pools of water which are enclosed within English country-style stone walls and surrounded by lush plants. The dramatic vintage English urn with its beautiful cascading florals was created by Dennis Harris of Zimlich the Florist.
Sponsored by The Florence Foundation, “Tablescapes – English Tea Time” is a perennial favorite of the festival venues. This festival exhibit displays the English accents of Mobile’s most talented designers and artists. An amazing rendition of the world’s most famous clock, Big Ben, is also featured.
These interpretations of British gardens are designed by several regionally acclaimed landscape architects and designers. They offer ideas and inspirations for festival enthusiasts to take home. Personally, I’m stealing the Gardener’s Garden “brick” idea!
Children’s Garden Venue
Sponsored by Mobile Gas, these exhibits provide educational and hands-on activities for young visitors to the Festival of Flowers. Children are able to learn about many subjects such as composting and the importance to the environment of “going green”.
Bellingrath Gardens and Home
Sponsored by Bellingrath Gardens and Home, this features a contemporary English design filled with tropical ornaments. The backdrop is a cascading fountain which features a towering waterfall that flows into a large pool.
Sponsored by Alabama Power Company, container gardening in pots, planters and window boxes allow for special gardens to be planted to dress up any lawn or facade, especially for those with limited time and space (like your’s truly).
Sponsored by Radiology Associates of Mobile, this exhibit replicates and pays homage to some of the United Kingdom’s most famous residences. These displays were just yummy!
The World of Flowers
Sponsored by Cardiology Associates of Mobile, Inc., the World of Flowers exhibit offers a visit through floral beauty from England and beyond. Imagine table after table of amazing floral arrangements…heavenly!
Joy Gardner was the Featured Artist at the 2014 Festival of Flowers. I love her use of pastel colors. So soothing! I think my favorite was the “Sewanee’s Weathered Barn”.
Have a blessed day!
